Josie!! Lovely that you are following all of our antics and processes, thank you.

Sounds like a plan so glad you are heading south. The geese are on their way, too. I'm gathering winter gear and just a tad jealous. ....

Steadfast is an excellent name for a vessel. Any name that speaks of fortitude, strength, and endurance is a good name. The hearty virtues.

Names like Pretty Good, Not that Bad, and It Should Work are best to avoid.

The last cruisers I met were sporting a 50' Grand Banks Trawler named PIGS FLEW. And a couple million $ along with them.... My husband is a marine Surveyor and the stories are endless! "JUST WALK AWAY" is a common suggestion. Hope it was a beautiful weekend out there. Glory glory here. J

Miles of Cotton. Your next book!

I'm glad, for you, that temperatures have moderated--and hopefully mosquitoes and fruit flies, too.

For the record, I read the first issue (email) and skimmed the online issue (Substack) and couldn't find where you'd redone anything substantive. I see lots of writers who add a qualifier at the top of the page that says, essentially, "For a more correct version, click here." I've updated many a grammatical hiccup after publishing. Since I don't have anyone proofing things before they go out, and like you, I am sometimes quite sleep deprived, I'm learning to forgive myself and carry on. :)

I never buy new stuff. I enjoy old stuff that, “with just a little work,” will be as good as new again.

And I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that way.

Switter are you chickenpurple@ ? Delighful moniker and many, many thanks for the support. To me, our connection has been and will continue to be absolutely priceless. I was pleased to read that sharing your incredible array of memories and experiences helps lessen the pain. It certainly gives me new perspectives and perceptions.

All the best, J

It IS the best name we could have chosen!! Reminds me of the big famous racers like TENACIOUS, too. Our friend just named his wooden girl RESILIENT. Old stuff. I fear that no one will every buy this boat from us (decades in the future) because it is not the easy path, and most people like new shiny so much better. It would be delightful if you could meet her in person someday although the Idaho waterways may prove prohibitive....

Always great to hear your thoughts. Thank you. J

There’s a reason why we call it “The River of No Return!”

I always thought “Indefatigable” was one of the best ship names ever.

As I remember from years ago helping a re-caulking job, it was only fun until the novelty of learning something new wore off. Your essay was another reminder that I really need to re-caulk my bathtub/shower. Even though latex caulk is sold for bathroom use, I now understand it molds easily and silicone should be used. Nothing like the tedium of pulling out cotton caulking though.

Not many people have recaulking memories my friend, but if you DO decide to revisit the skill, you know where to find me. I am learning the rhythm, chink by chink....

Yep, silicone for the bathrooms. I am the queen of fighting mold! Just another word that has too many meanings! Thanks very much for jumping in. J

So many re-s :-). We are familiar with the challenge but you are tackling an entirely different dimension. Thank you for reminding us again why we also let the teak toe-rail fade - best decision. And an easy coat of teak oil 2-3 times a year brings it back to life.

Larger than I imagined, too, although it's all relative and real. Looks like a beautiful weather window to head southward. And full moon to boot. Fair winds, safe travels, good people and whales, I wish for you. J
