Let there be steak! Fascinating start to a budding relationship. The grab of the arm, you in church reflecting, you’re inner light ( I see it too, always have) and so well written. Look forward to the day you share his story, it will be worth the wait. Thanks, J.
Good for you, Janice. As you well know, relationships like these are unique and not easy to come by. It takes authentic interest, a willingness to let things unfold, and yes, light. It will be some story, when it's told.
So far, you have depicted these gentlemen rather well. I got to know many through family connections, TIMC, and working on the water during my younger years. I enjoy your writing and look forward to reading more. If you are looking for story tellers you have made port in one of the most interesting areas in the country. I may be bias.
Unfortunately, you missed your opportunity to interview the greatest storyteller, Bunky Miller. When I lived in the area, I would tell my wife I was going to see him and she would just figure I wouldn’t be back for the day. He was my Sunday school teacher when I was very young; he built one of my Dad’s boats (Galilean Spirit) and of course, my sister marrying Dave.
But, there are others who might add some colorful commentary. Lawrence “LT” Tyler, Robert Crow (and sister Elaine), Capt. Wade Murphy, Capt. Stanley Larrimore (quiet but plenty of stories), Jackie Thompson (his stories are sometimes a little embellished), Russell Dize….blessed to still have these men with us. Of course, my Dad, Richard Abbott, not an island resident but over 6 decades of stories from working on the water.
I envy you taking time to write. It’s my intent to write my memoirs if I live long enough and my memory remains intact. Be blessed.
I am very sorry that I never took the opportunity to talk to Bunky. David and Jen are very special indeed.
I have crossed paths with some of these characters and Jackie is on my list without permission and without embellishments! I'm interested in your story, Jon. Where are you now?
LA (Lower Alabama). My wife and I are on a mission to assist our Son and Daughter in law in assuring our two Grandsons grow up to be exceptional young men.
I replied to this in my brain but it never made it to the keyboard. A difficult(?) and admirable choice. JULIA ROSE is down at the dock by Fairbanks Store. At low tide they have to help him up, and he’s not too keen on needin’hep. We’ve had to move the boat to Cambridge for repairs and now I’m the new girl in town again! Hope the flooding from Debby did not reach you and your family. J
My goodness, just when I thought I had read some of the best of your articles, I read of Johnny Kinnamon and your reference to the light inside you that all don't see. I heard it somewhere and meant much to me, "Don't let the light shining on you be greater than the light shinning in you."
Actually I think it was from Coach Dabo Swinney at Clemson University. This is a beautiful and well written piece.
Your commentary always makes me smile proudly, Winston. You have inspired me to say things that perhaps would have made me hesitate prior to 'meeting' you.
- If you had lived somewhere all your life,” he said to me, “You’d remember everything, too.” -
You always include the layered quotes … they speak volumes.
Thank you Scott. I try to pull out the pearls...

So great to read this, Keith, you make me smile. True connections are always worth the energy and the time that they take to develop! THANK YOU!

...and bias you deserve to be! There are characters galore. I look forward to depicting a few more!

Thank you from the center of that light.

Keep[ that smile going as it will confuse the bitterness in the world . So many don't know how to respond to a kind word or simple smile.
Janice, I wish someone could write YOUR story! There is no one anyplace like YOU.
Love you, Author Girl.
Donna
Your words touch my heart as always and thank you for believing in me. Your faith was a major contributor to where I am today!
Beautiful story and writing Janice! 🙏🤛💜
