Another beautiful story J! Thank you. As another who shares your priviledge of living with a waterfront view ON ALL SIDES, and a Captain who obsesses about obscure sailing details, and a need to keep improving and loving this old yacht of ours - I get it! Happy to know you here and share in your voyages.
Thanks LJ! Perspective is a lot of life, isn't it? Our privilege is fortunately not one that everyone covets, allowing the peaceful wanders that we seek and find. ! And the days fly by.
That they do! Another week has flown past here in the Solomon Islands. Totally appreciate that not everyone wants to do this, ir it wouldn't be what it is.
I found the quote I referenced a few weeks ago: “…(All) this is a feast for the eye and I’m reminded of something I read somewhere to the effect that when the shape of boats was largely determined by the natural lines that could be bent into wood, almost all boats were beautiful. Only when the advent of plastics made it possible for man to build any shape he wanted did a lot of truly ugly boats begin to appear.” ~ W.R. Cheney, “Penelope Down East: Cruising Adventures in an Engineless Catboat Along the World’s Most Beautiful Coast”
Sidebar: Engineless cruising would resolve your shaft commutator bonding brush issues … 😂
That whole Pardey-style engineless thing would save a lot of things....like a 3K diesel fillup...
I do love this feast for the eyes quote. We call it grace, too, so often when we see those sleep sailing schooner especially. Plastic can have many awkward corners. As a surveyor my Sailor has lots of unique nick names for vessels that probably should not have been designed the way they were... IMO you'd appreciate them all! So glad you're here, Scott and I will add a Geographic note. Still in Cambridge at the museum dock. We've leased it til September 30.....J
I think … IMO … that you’ve reached a juncture in your dialogue where each week it would be helpful if you started with a dateline announcing your current location. Cheers!
Spent July on Kauai (green sea turtles galore … lots of video!) I’m back to work, but I’ve been out a little … a little snorty and a little lumpy … but nice. Prime Central Coast sailing starts at the end of the month and usually goes through Christmas.
I guess time moving more quickly than we thought possible is a lot better than wishing it away. The savoring is such a lovely perspective. I so enjoy your voice recordings, Janice, and the sparkle in your eye that was so evident in your voice today. I do look forward to cooler days sooner than later. Thanks for being a bright part of my afternoon. And my life.
Can't wait either...one thing leads to another and another...it can feel endless...we just passed 25 months. Best of luck and admire the grit it takes! Where are you?
Port Townsend, Washington. It's a great boatyard and very convenient so it all works out for us. And it's a big job we are doing on our 50 year old fiberglass sailboat: new steering system plus new solar panels, batteries, and Victron "smart" electrical system so lots to do and learn. Hopefully we will splash in a month!
For those that dont know a shaft brush is what helps the electrical potentials equal out with the metal below the water. All metal below the water must have a specific amount of electrical current in order to not erode. This is done by using a sacrificial anode like zinc. We try and keep the metal at this certin level for our fastenings holding the planks on the boat to stay in good condition also thruhulls, shaft and propeller. The shaft brush makes an electrical connection even when it is rotating. I know not of a lot of interest from the girls but it is part of what keeps a nearly 100 year old yacht secure and floating. That's my job.

Consider it done. Also have a series coming out with a boat currently cruising the Southwest Pacific. Stay tuned. Have you been out testing the winds?

It's been a year already since we talked turtles?! Time does fly.
Hoping for a calm fall....

I so appreciate your attention and complicity in the awkward interesting moments of life.....never stop chuckling!
I can relate to just about everything in this post. We are deep in the boatyard blues here, but dreaming of being g out sailing again soon!

Thanks as always for your detailed explanation and information! My confidence lies in you and how much care you take with our life!
I don’t know Steve… I think electrical potential is often of a lot of interest to the girls. 🙃
Lots of different kinds of currents in the world, aren't there Elizabeth??!!
